The following instructions explain how to set-up Windows ME to dial and connect to Skylands Networks.
Step 1: Setting up the connection
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Dial-Up Networking.
2. If this is the first time you have used Dial-Up Networking, the Welcome to Dial-Up Networking wizard is initiated. If the wizard does not start, double-click Make New Connection.
3. Where it says "Type a name for the computer you are dialing," type Skylands Networks
4. Your modem should be displayed automatically in "Select a Device." If it is not, use the drop down arrow and select your modem from the list.
5. Click Next >.
6. For Telephone Number, enter the Skylands Networks access number you have been given. Note - if you have to dial the area code to place local calls, enter the area code directy in front of the 7 digit number, NOT in the box labeled Area Code.
IMPORTANT! The phone number displayed below is an example only!
7. Click the Next > button.
8. Click the Finish button.
9. Right-click the Skylands Networks icon, and click Properties.
10. Click the Networking tab.
11. "Type of dial up server" should read PPP: Internet, Windows 2000/NT, Windows Me
12. Uncheck all boxes EXCEPT "Enable software compression" and "TCP/IP."
13. Click OK
14. Right-click the Skylands Networks icon and click Create Shortcut.
15. When a window pops up stating that "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on your desktop instead?" Click Yes.
16. Close Dial Up Networking.
You should now have an icon on your Windows ME desktop called "Shortcut to Skylands Networks." To connect, simply double-click that icon, enter your username and password, and click Connect.
